Ocala, Florida
5-6:30 pm

Local residents, Jessica McCune and Lila Ivey have written and illustrated a children’s book, The Patron, the Docent, and the Webelo.

The Patron, the Docent, and the Webelo is a timeless story of the need for mutual respect, the capacity of the human spirit, and the power of art to communicate what words cannot express. Children and adults will delight in this gentle tale of human nature and life’s endless possibilities.

McCune’s encounter with the Webelos at the Dallas Museum of Art happened in the late 1980s. Watching the work of the museum’s Outreach Department interact with Boy Scout Troop Moms, volunteer docents plus the story behind the art, all within a 50-minute tour, created an inspiring memory that pumps out motivation for us all today.

The book, set in the 1990s, is a trip back to a previous generation when cultural prejudice did not stand in the way of a great man’s hope for a great artist to do great things. Today, its hopeful message of openness to others is more relevant than ever.

Marion Cultural Alliance is hosting a performance of the true story about a ‘magical museum’ on April 13 from 5-6:30 at The Brick City Center for the Arts. Both author and illustrator will be present to sell and sign books. McCune will perform the story (5:30 pm) and Ivey will answer questions about the illustrations plus the process of taking the oral story to the written and illustrated page.
